They say opportunity knocks only once and most often faintly. If you don’t take the trouble to hear it, it just passes you by. That sounds just great! That tells me to live the rest of my life, WAITING and listening intently for a faint knock! Whatever happened to making your own destiny? Do we really believe that all the greats in the world had just one shot? Did Michal Jordan race to fame by scoring a 3pointer in his first ever attempt at shooting a basketball? Did Beethoven become a great composer by writing the world’s best masterpiece on his first crack at composing? What would life be if any of these brilliant people believed they had only one opportunity and just gave up trying if it passed them by? Could we live like that?
I, for one, would not want to live a life waiting for that one special chance to turn my life into something unforgettable. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I had missed that opportunity and couldn’t hope for another chance. They say “Hope springs eternal in the human breast” and what are we, as a race, if we do not have hope – Hope for a brighter future, hope for that life-changing moment, hope for a chance to prove we are worth something, not only to the world but also to ourselves. If we live, believing opportunity just knocks once, we don’t have any reason to hope we’d get another shot at enhancing this life of ours. If we don’t have hope, I doubt we can even say we are living. Yes, the bodily functions go on but the passion just dies.
As you’ve probably guessed, I don’t believe in waiting for that one sliver of a possibility that I can do something with my life. I believe in making opportunities. I’ve been lucky enough to have prospects thrown at me, some I grabbed with a child-like eagerness, and others passed me by quietly without my realization until it was too late. The only thing that kept me going was the fact there would be another time when I could stand up straight, look Life in the eyes and threaten it to give me what I want (or there’d be hell to pay)! There had to be – and I would make it happen! Life’s too short to waste it waiting around for something. It’s time to go out there, with a goal in our minds and conviction in our hearts, and grab Life by its freakin’ balls and start living!
